It's important to have a few of the essential quilting supplies whenever starting a new hobby or attempting a new craft. When you enter a craft or hobby department, it's easy to be overwhelmed by the large and varied selection of items. You should purchase these basic essential quilting supplies:
One medium-sized rotary cutting mat
One rotary cutter
One good, straight ruler marked with 45- and 60-degree angles
Quilting pins with large heads
Quilting thread for hand quilting
Good cotton thread for machine quilting
Good, sharp sewing machine needles
Size 9 or 10 needles for hand quilting
The list is short but it works. As you become more confident in your quilting, there is a bevy of gadgets out there just waiting for you to try.
You should also choose a quilting pattern. To start, look for a pattern with fewer and larger pieces, like a simple star or a four or nine patch. It's easier to work with the larger pattern pieces. And when it comes to machine or hand quilting, some enjoy both techniques, depending on the project. Like any other craft, the more you work at quilting, the easier it becomes. It all starts with the basic essential items and the desire to make something wonderful from fabric.
