Knowing how to make a knitting loom will make you even more versatile in your crafting. Your kids can also use simple knitting looms.
How to Make a Knitting Loom: Wood Loom
In order to make this loom, you will need wood, nails, a hammer, a pencil and a ruler.
Get a flat plank of wood that is approximately the width of the project you are interested in knitting. Sand the wood down so that the wood is smooth and doesn't snag. You can also simply glue or tape paper over the wood if you don't have any sand paper. However, if the wood is splintering so much that the splinters will pierce the paper, you need to work on finishing the wood.
You will be using nails to hold your thread. These nails need to be placed in a straight line. Using a pencil and ruler, measure and mark the center on one end of the plank. Repeat on the opposite side. Then, connect the two marks with a line.
Your nails should be placed between one-quarter to one inch apart from each other. The closer the nails are in distance from each other, the tighter the weave you will have. Measure and mark the distance that you choose between your nails on the line that you have already drawn. Nail the nails in place so that the nails are sturdy, but not hammered almost all of the way into the wood.
You are now ready to start weaving!
How to Make a Knitting Loom: Spool Weaver
You can make a spool weaver that your kids can use from a toilet paper tube and four Popsicle sticks. Of course, you can use it, too.
Glue the Popsicle sticks to the outside of the tube with the same distance between each stick. The sticks should extend above the tube about an inch or so that you can weave over them.
Actually, you can make spool weavers from a number of different materials, including cut-to-size dowels and coffee cans and wooden spools with nails. You probably already have everything that you need to get started with a spool weaver right at home.
Go for it!
